Among the bottom tier of NFL teams this season, the Jaguars very well be the most exciting and promising. Many passionate football fans including myself are intrigued to see how this new regime will pan out and the jags fan base seems to be very optimistic. There are very few reasons to be concerned about the QB situation in Jacksonville as they have just about the highest upside you could have at the position with Trevor Lawrence in addition to having the best backup option in the league with Gardner Minshew. The big question with this team is how Urban Myers’s coaching ability is going to translate to the NFL as the franchise is in desperate need of a high-end coach to bring a legitimate culture change to its locker room. The pieces are set for Myer to have a shot at succeeded and the difference between this team’s ceiling and the floor is massive as they have a lot of untapped potential. I have already started to form concerns with the direction the team is headed based on how Myer and Trent Baalke managed their first offseason by making a considerable amount of overpays especially with giving Cam Robinson the franchise tag. The biggest question to be answered however is how well he’ll use and develop his players as well as if he’ll make a significant culture change. Even if everything goes well for the jags and Urban Myer proves to be fit for the pros, it likely will be a year or two before this team is seriously competitive.

With the addition of the elite prospect in Trevor Lawrence at QB, Jacksonville has a very intriguing offense that has the upside to be elite sooner than later. One offseason move this team made that is good was hiring Darrell Bevell as the OC; this makes sense due to the success Bevell had with Matthew Stafford who was actually my pro comp for Lawrence but with more speed and more room to grow. It wouldn’t shock me to see this play caller-coach combo have enough success to land Bevell a job as a head coach. They have a solid group of receivers for Lawrence to target and the guys they have possess very good upside with DJ Chark having the potential to breakout. This O-line is not steller but shouldn’t hinder the success of the passing offense at all and we may see some good development barring how well Myer will coach and motivate older players. They have a very promising running back room to rely on with Travis Etienne and James Robinson which should compensate for their subpar run blocking to an extent. Even if this offense isn’t overly productive in 2021 I’m still very excited to see how this young talented group performs.

It wasn’t too long ago this defense stunned the league by having the best statistical defense with an elite pass rush. The core of that defense somehow completely fell apart and became one of the worst in the league but now after the franchise has reset its direction, they have established a new set of players to build from. This defense luckily has a long-term answer with Myles Jack who is the ideal leader to build a defense around there is also a good group of young talented players with elite upside in the likes of Josh Allen and C.J. Henderson. If those two players hit their upside, this team will have all three levels of their defense established with stars, making it easy to fill the margins to form a top defense. K’lavon Chaisson is a pass rusher who could easily turn into a star given the right coaching and there is a handful of other young players with upside in the secondary as well. Joe Cullen, the defensive coordinator is very unproven, the same uncertainty with Myer makes it hard to tell the likelihood of this defense developing. Regardless if this defense reaches its potential in the future or not, it is unlikely that they will perform beyond a bottom-five defense this season.
