Jack Campbell Scouting Report: A Large And Pro-Ready Linebacker

It is genuinely challenging to find pro-ready linebackers like Jack Campbell in the draft. He completely dominated at Iowa and subsequently won the Butkus Award for best Linebacker. That is an impressive feat, and his film was quite pleasant to watch as well. Recently at the combine, he put up impressive numbers for being such a large player. While his upside may not be what you’re looking for, he has a safe floor you can rely on.

Two all-22 games and two Youtube games were evaluated. This scouting report includes grades on all relevant traits based on his film. His scouting report also factored in stats and analytics, such as PFF grades. Use promo code TREYSCHNEIDER on Underdog Fantasy to match your deposit up to $100. Clip Analysis

In this clip above, Campbell quickly identifies the run and triggers on the ball before it is even-handed off. He then made the tackle in the backfield.

In this one, he gets a very impressive pick on C.J. Stroud. He is in zone, appearing to be playing a 3 REC hook zone. He simply reads the eyes of the QB and intercepts the passing lane Stroud was looking towards.

Here he makes another great read and gets himself a run stop. He quickly triggered on the ball and aggressively pursued the HB.

Player Notes

Jack Campbell Bio

  • Despite the lack of range, Jack Campbell is a day-one full-time starter with a multitude of desirable traits. He doesn’t have a lot of spice to his game, but he gets the job done. He is currently ranked 39th on The FBI 2023 Draft Board.

Pros

  • 79″ wingspan, which is in the 90th percentile.
  • Effective three-down player.
  • Some of the best play recognition you’ll ever see out of a linebacker – on par with many starting NFL linebackers.
  • Elite gap discipline.
  • Exceptional tackling technique.
  • Considerably fluid hips in coverage.
  • Gets good depth and trusts his eyes in coverage.
  • High awareness of the field and outstanding communication abilities.
  • His instincts and short-area quickness make up for his lack of run-defense speed.
  • Can take on blocks head-on and cause disruption.
  • A great option to match up against Tight Ends.

Cons

  • Speed and range limit him in coverage.
  • Isn’t the ideal guy to cover backs one on one.
  • Average change of direction ability limits his upside in man coverage.
  • Late with his hands when he engages with blockers.
  • Arm length isn’t a strength.

Final Conclusion

Jack Campbell is a safe bet to be a quality starter bringing him excellent value. You just want to see world-class athleticism to be a first-round guy – something he doesn’t have. Though in a world where quality starters at LB are rare, he’d be a fabulous addition in the mid-second round.
