Trey Benson is a prospect who many analysts project as a late-day-two type of guy. However, after watching his film, I genuinely could see him going in round one. You don’t see many running back prospects with his size have such impressive explosiveness and top-end speed. He’s far from a Bijan Robinson, but so far, Benson sticks out as the best running back in this class. There are also many little things Benson does so well that fans tend to overlook. Why would someone like Benson, with all these incredible traits, not be considered a potential first-rounder? Well, that’s what we’ll try to figure out in this article. Trey Benson shows excellent explosiveness and good vision to hit this hole in the clip above. It’s a well-blocked, downhill, power run and Benson makes the most of the good blocking by taking it to the house.
This clip shows a couple of nice things. Benson had solid patience to let his blocks develop and explodes into the gap with aggressiveness. Then, he is tough to bring down as it takes nearly half the team to bring him down.
Benson shows off his versatility in this one by making two defenders miss in space on the outside. He also shows borderline elite speed to take this one home.

It’s baffling to see the consensus isn’t very high on Trey Benson. Typically, when a player like him is as talented as he is but isn’t getting much hype, it’s due to injuries or character concerns. While he’s had a serious injury in the past, nothing significant has bothered him lately, and he had the resilience to fully recover from that brutal injury. With how little carries he got in college, I wouldn’t be worried about him being an injury risk. The other reason people may not be as high on him is simply the lack of production. It’s not like he got many opportunities, but people may still look at his stats and shy away. What matters the most to me is your traits and Benson has all of the ones I look for.
If he can improve his vision and become a better route runner, this is a three-down back we’re talking about here. Benson can not only be an efficient runner in short-yardage situations but can also be an explosive, home-run-hitting back. That’s someone you take in the top 50. There isn’t one other back in this class who can wear as many hats as Benson does. I would even argue he’s worth a late first-rounder, as he can start day one and has superstar potential. It wouldn’t be surprising to see Benson shoot up draft boards after the combine, and if he does fall, that team will be getting a steal.
